 Tanjore paintings,

 

 An amalgam of religion with royal heritage

 

Tanjore art work, one of the traditional art form of India, was originated in the early 18th century at Tanjore(300 kms from Chennai),India. It was the period when Chola dynasty was at the peak of cultural evolution. These paintings also reached its zenith under the royal patronage.

Passing through generations, today these paintings adorns many house holds.

 

Indian mythology is the subject of Tanjore paintings, Lord Krishna being the most favorite god. The brilliant colour schemes, decorative jewellery with use of precious and semi precious stones and intricate relief work done in pure gold, is the distinctive style of Tanjore paintings.

It comes in various sizes, ranging from huge works spanning the whole walls, to small miniatures no longer than 6-inches.

The process involved to create these paintings is as intricate as the painting itself.

It starts with readying the water proof board with the help of some powders and adhesives. The picture is drawn on the board thus prepared. Then starts the tedious process of giving three dimensional effect, using paste of lime stone and arabic gum along with the fixing the gems and stones for decorating the picture. Next the pure gold leaves are pasted on selected area. Finally poster colours are applied to the painting, in order to create an everlasting piece of art.
